RESUMO

City reputation is a valuable asset for the local economy and firms in the contemporary society. However, the impact of city reputation on micro-level firms has been largely overlooked by the literature. This paper uses the National Civilized City (NCC) policy in China as a quasi-natural experiment to enhance city reputation. We employ the DID approach to investigate the relationship between city reputation and corporate risk-taking. The result shows that corporate risk-taking significantly increases following the NCC policy adoption. Moreover, information asymmetry can strengthen the positive impact of city reputation on corporate risk-taking. Channel tests show that city reputation improves financial condition and decreases default risk, leading to improved risk-taking tolerance. Overall, our paper indicates that city reputation is an important mechanism to improve corporate financial performance, providing empirical evidence for local governments to pursue the NCC title.

RESUMO

As one of the most urgent social and health problems in the world, neurodegenerative diseases have always been of interest to researchers. However, the pathological mechanisms and therapeutic approaches are not achieved. In addition to the established roles of oxidative stress, inflammation and immune response, changes of gut microbiota are also closely related to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Gut microbiota is the central player of the gut-brain axis, the dynamic bidirectional communication pathway between gut microbiota and central nervous system, and emerging insights have confirmed its indispensability in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. In this review, we discuss the complex relationship between gut microbiota and the central nervous system from the perspective of the gut-brain axis; review the mechanism of microbiota for the modulation different neurodegenerative diseases and discuss how different dietary patterns affect neurodegenerative diseases via gut microbiota; and prospect the employment of gut microbiota in the therapeutic approach to those diseases. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

A (3 + 3) annulation of aminocyclopropanes and vinyldiazo compounds enabled by organo-photocatalysis is described. The reaction allows the regioselective synthesis of cyclohexenes bearing adjacent amino and carbonyl groups with broad functional group tolerance. In a departure from previous reports, our work demonstrated that a distonic radical cation can be preferentially intercepted by weakly nucleophilic vinyldiazo compounds, followed by an exclusive 6-endo radical cyclization for ring closure. Based on the interaction between adjacent amino and ester groups, the products can be further converted to cyclohexene-fused 1,3-oxazinane and azetidine.

RESUMO

Freehand 3D ultrasound imaging is emerging as a promising modality for regular spine exams due to its non-invasiveness and affordability. The laminae landmarks play a critical role in depicting the 3D shape of the spine. However, the extraction of the 3D lamina curves from transverse ultrasound sequences presents a challenging task, primarily attributed to the presence of diverse contrast variations, imaging artifacts, the complex surface of vertebral bones, and the difficulties associated with probe manipulation. This paper proposes Sequential Localization Recurrent Convolutional Networks (SL-RCN), a novel deep learning model that takes the contextual relationships into account and embeds the transformation matrix feature as a 3D knowledge base to enhance accurate ultrasound sequence analysis. The assessment involved the analysis of 3D ultrasound sequences obtained from 10 healthy adult human participants, covering both the lumbar and thoracic regions. The performance of SL-RCN is evaluated through 7-fold cross-validation, employing the leave-one-participant-out strategy. The validity of the AI model training is assessed on test data from 3 participants. Normalized Discrete Fréchet Distance (NDFD) is employed as the main metric to evaluate the disparity of the extracted 3D lamina curves. In contrast to our previous 2D image analysis method, SL-RCN generates reduced left/right mean distance errors from 1.62/1.63mm to 1.41/1.40mm, and NDFDs from 0.5910/0.6389 to 0.4276/0.4567. The increase in the mean NDFD value from 7-fold cross-validation to the test-data experiment is less than 0.05. The experiments demonstrate the SL-RCN's capability in extracting accurate paired smooth lamina landmark curves.

RESUMO

To study the genetic background of lily (Lilium spp.) germplasm resources, and accurately evaluate and select excellent germplasm for genetic improvement of lily, we analyzed the genetic background of 62 lily germplasm accessions from 11 provinces of China by using simple sequence repeat (SSR) molecular markers. The results showed that 15 out of 83 pairs of lily SSR primers were polymorphic. A total of 157 allelic loci were amplified, with the number of alleles per locus ranging from 5 to 19 and the average number of effective alleles per locus being 4.162 8. The average observed heterozygosity and expected heterozygosity were 0.228 2 and 0.694 1, respectively. The average polymorphic information content was 0.678 8. The average Nei's diversity index and Shannon's information index were 0.694 1 and 1.594 9, respectively, indicating that the tested lily germplasm had high genetic diversity. The 62 germplasm accessions were classified into 5 groups by the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) and into 3 groups by the principal component analysis. The two analyses revealed a geographic correlation among different groups. The majority of lily germplasm accessions from the same source tended to cluster together. The population structure analysis classified the lily accessions into 4 populations and 1 mixed population. The above results provide a theoretical basis and genetic resources for the precise identification and breeding of lily germplasm resources.

RESUMO

The multicellular trichomes of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) serve as the primary defense barrier against external factors, whose impact extends beyond plant growth and development to include commercial characteristics of fruits. The aphid (Aphis gossypii Glover) is one of prominent pests in cucumber cultivation. However, the relationship between physical properties of trichomes and the aphid resistance at molecular level remains largely unexplored. Here, a spontaneous mutant trichome morphology (tm) was characterized by increased susceptibility towards aphid. Further observations showed the tm exhibited a higher and narrower trichome base, which was significantly distinguishable from that in wild-type (WT). We conducted map-based cloning and identified the candidate, CsTM, encoding a C-lectin receptor-like kinase. The knockout mutant demonstrated the role of CsTM in trichome morphogenesis. The presence of SNP does not regulate the relative expression of CsTM, but diminishes the CsTM abundance of membrane proteins in tm. Interestingly, CsTM was found to interact with CsTIP1;1, which encodes an aquaporin with extensive reports in plant resistance and growth development. The subsequent aphid resistance experiments revealed that both CsTM and CsTIP1;1 regulated the development of trichomes and conferred resistance against aphid by affecting cytoplasmic H2O2 contents. Transcriptome analysis revealed a significant enrichment of genes associated with pathogenesis, calcium binding and cellulose synthase. Overall, our study elucidates an unidentified mechanism that CsTM-CsTIP1;1 alters multicellular trichome morphology and enhances resistance against aphid, thus providing a wholly new perspective for trichome morphogenesis in cucumber.

RESUMO

Microorganisms are highly sensitive to toxic metal pollution and play an important role in the material cycling and energy flow of the water ecosystem. Herein, 13 sediment samples from Junchong Reservoir (Guangxi Province, China) were collected in December 2021. The spatial distribution of pollution levels for toxic metals and the effects of toxic metals on the composition, functional characteristics, and metabolism of microorganisms were investigated. The results demonstrated that the area is a proximate area to industrial zones with severity of toxic metal pollution. Their mean concentrations of As, Cu, Zn, and Pb were up to 128.79 mg/kg, 57.62 mg/kg, 594.77 mg/kg, and 97.12 mg/kg respectively. There was a strong correlation between As, Cu, Zn, and Pb, with the highest correlation coefficient reaching 0.94. As the level of toxic metal pollution increases, the diversity and abundance of microorganisms gradually decrease. Compared to those with lower pollution levels, the Shannon index in regions with higher pollution levels decreases by up to 0.373, and the Chao index decreases by up to 143.507. However, the relative abundance of Bacteroidota, Patescibacteria, and Chloroflexi increased by 23%, 20%, and 5%, respectively, indicating their higher adaptability to toxic metals. Furthermore, microbial carbon and nitrogen metabolism were also affected by the presence of toxic metals. FAPROTAX analysis demonstrated an abundant reduction of ecologically functional groups associated with carbon and nitrogen transformations under high toxic metal pollution levels. KEGG pathway analysis indicated that carbon fixation and nitrogen metabolism pathways were inhibited with increasing toxic metal concentrations. These findings would contribute to a better understanding of the effects of toxic metal pollution on sediment microbial communities and function, shedding light on the ecological consequences of toxic metal contamination.

RESUMO

Climate change affects the content and composition of soil organic carbon (SOC). However, warming-induced changes in the SOC compounds remain unknown. Using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, molecular mixing models, and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, we analyzed the variations and relationships in molecular compounds in Mollisol with 10-56 g C kg-1 soil-1 by translocating soils under six climate regimes. We found that increased temperature and precipitation were negatively correlated with carbohydrate versus lipid and lignin versus protein. The former was consistent across soils with varying SOC contents, but the latter decreased as the SOC content increased. The carbohydrate-lipid correlations were related to dithionite-citrate-extractable Fe, while the lignin-protein correlations were linked to changes in moisture and pyrophosphate-extractable Fe/Al. Our findings indicate that the reduction in the mineral protection of SOC is associated with molecular alterations in SOC under warming conditions.

RESUMO

Diosmin is a flavonoid derived from plants, possessing anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, neuroprotective and cardiovascular protective properties. However, diosmin has low solubility in water, leading to low bioavailability. In this study, we constructed bilayer nanoparticles with trimethyl chitosan and soy peptides to improve the oral bioaccessibility and bioavailability of diosmin, and determined the characteristics and antioxidant properties of the diosmin-loaded nanoparticles. The results showed that the size of the nanoparticles was around 250 nm with the encapsulation efficiency higher than 97 %, and the nanoparticles were stable under regular conditions. In vitro digestion suggested the nanoparticles could protect diosmin from releasing in gastric digestion but promote the bioaccessibility of diosmin in intestine. Furthermore, the diosmin-loaded nanoparticles presented excellent antioxidant activities in vitro and significantly decreased the Lipopolysaccharides-induced brain Malondialdehyde (MDA) level by oral administration. Therefore, the reported nanoparticles may be an effective platform for improving the oral bioavailability of diosmin.

RESUMO

Background: Vocal cord polyps are commonly encountered in the otorhinolaryngology department. The risk of anesthesia is high in patients with large vocal cord polyps. Awake intubation with appropriate airway tools provides a favorable safety profile. Case: We present the case of a 60-year-old male patient who had been suffering from a large vocal cord polyp for 16 years. Electronic laryngoscopy revealed that the vocal cord polyp was approximately 1.5 cm in diameter. The polyp had a pedicle and demonstrated synchronous motion with respiratory excursion. It covered almost the entire glottic area during inspiration and moved away from the glottis during expiration. A Disposcope endoscope was used for awake tracheal intubation, and the surgery was completed successfully. Conclusion: The Disposcope endoscope can be a useful option for awake orotracheal intubation in cases of anticipated difficult intubation and difficult facemask ventilation.

RESUMO

This study addresses the escalating risk of high-speed railway (HSR) infrastructure in China, amplified by climate warming, increased rainfall, frequent extreme weather, and geohazard events. Leveraging a georeferenced dataset of recent HSR defects obtained through an extensive literature review, we employ machine learning techniques for a quantitative multi-defect risk assessment. Climatic, geomorphological, geohydrological, and anthropogenic variables influencing HSR subgrade safety are identified and ranked. Climatic factors significantly impact frost damage and mud pumping, while geomorphological variables exhibit greater influence on settlement and uplift deformation defects. Notably, frost damage is prevalent in the northeast and northwest, mud pumping along the southeast coast, and settlement and uplift deformation in the northwest and central areas. The generated comprehensive risk map underscores high-risk zones, particularly the Menyuan Hui Autonomous and Minle County sections of the Lanzhou-Urumqi HSR, emphasizing the need for focused attention and preventive actions to mitigate potential losses and ensure operational continuity.

RESUMO

Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) has become a major cause of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants worldwide, yet its pathogenesis and underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. The present study sought to explore microRNA-mRNA regulatory networks and immune cells involvement in BPD through a combination of bioinformatic analysis and experimental validation. Methods: MicroRNA and mRNA microarray datasets were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed microRNAs (DEMs) were identified in BPD patients compared to control subjects, and their target genes were predicted using miRWalk, miRNet, miRDB, and TargetScan databases. Subsequently, protein-protein interaction (PPI) and functional enrichment analyses were conducted on the target genes. 30 hub genes were screened using the Cytohubba plugin of the Cytoscape software. Additionally, mRNA microarray data was utilized to validate the expression of hub genes and to perform immune infiltration analysis. Finally, real-time PCR (RT-PCR), immunohistochemistry (IHC), and flow cytometry were conducted using a mouse model of BPD to confirm the bioinformatics findings. Results: Two DEMs (miR-15b-5p and miR-20a-5p) targeting genes primarily involved in the regulation of cell cycle phase transition, ubiquitin ligase complex, protein serine/threonine kinase activity, and MAPK signaling pathway were identified. APP and four autophagy-related genes (DLC1, PARP1, NLRC4, and NRG1) were differentially expressed in the mRNA microarray dataset. Analysis of immune infiltration revealed significant differences in levels of neutrophils and naive B cells between BPD patients and control subjects. RT-PCR and IHC confirmed reduced expression of APP in a mouse model of BPD. Although the proportion of total neutrophils did not change appreciably, the activation of neutrophils, marked by loss of CD62L, was significantly increased in BPD mice. Conclusion: Downregulation of APP mediated by miR-15b-5p and miR-20a-5p may be associated with the development of BPD. Additionally, increased CD62L- neutrophil subset might be important for the immune-mediated injury in BPD.

RESUMO

The fitness function value is a kind of important information in the search process, which can be more targeted according to the guidance of the fitness function value. Most existing meta-heuristic algorithms only use the fitness function value as an indicator to compare the current variables as good or bad but do not use the fitness function value in the search process. To address this problem, the mathematical idea of the fitting is introduced into the meta-heuristic algorithm, and a symmetric projection optimizer (SPO) is proposed to solve numerical optimization and engineering problems more efficiently. The SPO algorithm mainly utilizes a new search mechanism, the symmetric projection search (SP) method. The SP method quickly completes the fitting of the projection plane, which is located through the symmetry of the two points and finds the minima in the projection plane according to the fitting result. Fitting by using the fitness function values allows the SP to find regions where extreme values may exist more quickly. Based on the SP method, exploration and exploitation strategies are constructed, respectively. The exploration strategy is used to find better regions, and the exploitation strategy is used to optimize the discovered regions continuously. The timing of the use of the two strategies is designed so that the SPO algorithm can converge faster while avoiding falling into local optima. The effectiveness of the SPO algorithm is extensively evaluated using seven test suites, including CEC2017, CEC2019, CEC2020, and CEC2022. It is also compared with two sets of 19 recent competitive algorithms. Statistical analyses are performed using five metrics such as the Wilcoxon test, the Friedman test, and variance. Finally, the practicality of the SPO algorithm is verified by four typical engineering problems and a real spacecraft trajectory optimization problem. The results show that the SPO algorithm can find superior results in 94.6% of the comparison tests and is a promising alternative for solving real-world problems.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Azvudine is an effective treatment for patients infected with common COVID-19. However, physicians have reported a series of adverse reactions, including multiple cases of liver injury, caused by azvudine in clinical practice. This study assessed the incidence, clinical features, and associated risk factors of liver injury induced by azvudine in real-world settings, offering guidance for safe clinical use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study utilized the Chinese Hospital Pharmacovigilance System (CHPS) to retrospectively analyze the treatment of COVID-19 patients with azvudine at Changsha Central Hospital from December 19, 2022, to June 6, 2023. A case-control study was conducted to analyze the occurrence of azvudine-induced liver injury in COVID-19 patients who triggered a CHPS alert compared to normal COVID-19 patients. RESULTS: Among the total of 2,141 COVID-19 patients, 31 (1.45%) developed azvudine-induced liver injury, which is classified as an occasional adverse reaction. Liver injury was observed in 93.55% of patients between days 4 and 12 of the azvudine treatment, with elevated transaminases as the primary clinical manifestation. Univariate and binary logistic regression analyses indicated that low albumin levels and co-administration of low-molecular-weight heparin were statistically significant risk factors (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study represents the first investigation of azvudine-induced liver injury and high-risk patients using the CHPS. The findings provide valuable insights to promote the safety of anti-COVID-19 drugs, serving as an important reference for future drug safety measures.

RESUMO

Although gene loss is common in evolution, it remains unclear whether it is an adaptive process. In a survey of seven major mangrove clades that are woody plants in the intertidal zones of daily environmental perturbations, we noticed that they generally evolved reduced gene numbers. We then focused on the largest clade of Rhizophoreae and observed the continual gene set reduction in each of the eight species. A great majority of gene losses are concentrated on environmental interaction processes, presumably to cope with the constant fluctuations in the tidal environments. Genes of the general processes for woody plants are largely retained. In particular, fewer gene losses are found in physiological traits such as viviparous seeds, high salinity, and high tannin content. Given the broad and continual genome reductions, we propose the May-Wigner theory (MWT) of system stability as a possible mechanism. In MWT, the most effective solution for buffering continual perturbations is to reduce the size of the system (or to weaken the total genic interactions). Mangroves are unique as immovable inhabitants of the compound environments in the land-sea interface, where environmental gradients (such as salinity) fluctuate constantly, often drastically. Extending MWT to gene regulatory network (GRN), computer simulations and transcriptome analyses support the stabilizing effects of smaller gene sets in mangroves vis-à-vis inland plants. In summary, we show the adaptive significance of gene losses in mangrove plants, including the specific role of promoting phenotype innovation and a general role in stabilizing GRN in unstable environments as predicted by MWT.

RESUMO

Eleutherococcus senticosus (Rupr. & Maxim.) Maxim. fruits (ESF), as a natural edible fruit, has long been popularized. However, few studies have conducted comprehensive chemical analyses of it. This study aimed to assess nonvolatile, volatile, and fatty oil components of ESF and to preliminarily explore the antioxidant activities. The qualitative and quantitative analyses of volatile and fatty oil components of ESF from 15 different regions were performed by the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Totally, 37 and 28 compounds were identified from volatile oil and fatty oil, respectively. The ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS) was used to accurately detect 43 compounds of nonvolatile components. The volatile and fatty oil components and nonvolatile components of ESF were used as samples to determine the antioxidant activity of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) in vitro. The components of ESF had antioxidant activity, and the nonvolatile components had stronger antioxidant activity. The results revealed that the proposed method, which is of great significance for the screening of new active ingredients, is valuable for the identification of pharmaceutical component and further development of food industry.

RESUMO

China has the world's longest high-speed rail (HSR) network, marked by dense transportation and complex operations. However, frequent train use coupled with extreme weather conditions has led to rising subgrade issues. Existing railway defect records suffer from inconsistency, hindering direct applicability. Currently, there is a lack of a relevant dataset dedicated to HSR subgrade defects. To bridge this gap, we developed a comprehensive georeferenced dataset that encompasses defect records extracted from peer-reviewed literature published between 1999 and 2023 in China. Rigorous quality control procedures were implemented to eliminate duplicate data and ensure the accuracy of the dataset. The dataset consists of georeferenced records for eight different defects, spanning across 661 locations and categorized at various scales, ranging from provinces to townships. The most commonly reported defect types include subgrade settlement, frost damage, uplift deformation, and mud pumping. This dataset provides a comprehensive map of historical subgrade defects affecting high-speed railways in China. It could facilitate operational risk assessments and the prediction of subgrade performance.

RESUMO

China was the first country in the world to breed goldfish and has generated many unique goldfish varieties, including the most aristocratic Chinese palace goldfish. Due to the lack of scientific research on Chinese palace goldfish, their selection and breeding are mainly carried out through traditional hybridization, leading to serious inbreeding and the degradation of germplasm resources. To this end, whole-genome resequencing was performed to understand the genetic variation among three different varieties (eggpompons, goosehead, and tigerhead) from nine core conserved populations in China. A total of 15 polymorphic SSRs were developed for population genetics, and all tested populations were considered moderately polymorphic with an average polymorphism information content value of 0.4943. Genetic diversity in different varieties showed that all conserved populations were well protected with the potential for continued exploitation. This study provides reliable molecular tools and a basis for designing conservation and management programs in Chinese palace goldfish.
